Clover vs Square: the reseller trap.

First-year true cost worked — and why the seller matters more than the system when Clover comes through a bank or reseller.

Clover's hardware advantage vs Square's contract-free setup.

Clover and Square are the two POS systems a Canadian retailer or restaurant actually chooses between — and the comparison most sites write is about the software. That is the wrong comparison. Square sells direct: published rates, no contract, buy the hardware at list price. Clover (Fiserv) sells two ways: direct, and through banks and independent resellers who set their own rates, leases, and contracts on identical hardware. The reseller channel is where Clover deals go to die — and where this guide focuses.

First-year true cost: worked TCO

The setup: single-location retail, 2 lanes, $30,000/month card volume, $40 average ticket (750 transactions).

Square (Retail Plus $89/mo): software $1,068/year + 2 × Terminal $299 = $598 hardware. Processing: $360,000 × 2.5% = $9,000. Year-1 total: ~$10,666.

Clover direct (Standard $44.95/mo/device): software $1,079/year + 2 × Flex $749 = $1,498 hardware. Processing at 2.3% + 10¢: $8,280 + $900 = $9,180. Year-1 total: ~$11,757.

Clover via reseller: the same, plus hidden fees (~$60/mo = $720/year) — and the documented worst cases: 4-year leases totalling $7,200 on $1,899 hardware, effective rates of 5–6%. Year-1 total: ~$12,477 before the lease math turns predatory.

Direct-vs-direct, the gap is about $1,100 in year one — real but not dramatic. The reseller channel is where the gap becomes a chasm.

The reseller trap: Clover's real channel

Here is the thing that makes Clover reviews so contradictory. Fiserv sells Clover directly — but so do banks and independent sales organizations, and they set their own processing rates, lease terms, and contracts on the same hardware. The ratings tell the story in one line: Clover holds around 3.9 on G2 and Capterra, where reviews skew toward the product, but 2.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, where reviews skew toward billing and contracts. Same system. Different seller. Documented worst cases include effective processing rates of 5 to 6 percent, four-year leases totalling $7,200 on hardware that sells for $1,899, and termination fees from $500 to over $2,000.

The defence is procedural, not technical: get a written quote from Clover directly, and if a bank or processor offers you Clover, compare every line — rate, lease vs purchase, term, exit fee — against that direct quote before signing anything. A bank rep pitching Clover should be treated as a signal to price-check, not a recommendation.

Takeout orders lined up on a pickup counter
Online ordering commission can move the POS decision on its own.

Online ordering and lock-in

One genuine Clover Canada advantage: no-commission online ordering with an eligible device and a Counter Service or Table Service plan — card-not-present interchange rates apply, but there is no per-order commission on top. Square Online charges 2.8% + 30¢ on every e-commerce order. For a restaurant doing $8,000/month in online orders, that is the difference between roughly $200 in interchange-plus cost and roughly $300 on Square's flat online rate — modest, but it compounds.

The lock-in both share: neither allows bring-your-own-processor. Clover locks to Fiserv, Square to Square Payments. Your processor quote is your exit cost — there is no switching processors without switching systems.

What merchants report

Bought direct, Clover's hardware earns genuine praise — the Flex handheld is a fixture at counter-service spots, and TechRadar's hands-on review calls inventory management a bright spot while noting fees sit mid-pack. Square's Canadian reviewers on Capterra (April 2026, 4/5) praise the simplicity — "simple, convenient, makes taking payments feel easy" — with fees the consistent knock. Square's support remains the weak point across review sites.

Who fits whom

  1. Choose Square if you want to be selling this week: no contract, published pricing, hardware at list. Best for new, low-volume, or single-location operators.
  2. Choose Clover direct if you want dedicated restaurant hardware, no-commission online ordering, and a negotiated bundle — and you buy it from Clover, not a bank.
  3. Never buy Clover through a reseller without a direct quote to compare. Line-compare rate, lease vs purchase, term, and exit fee. The worst documented deals cost 3–4× the hardware's price in leases alone.
  4. Price the lock-in. Neither system lets you change processors later. Treat the processing quote as permanent until you replace the system.

A note from the audit desk: contract length and termination fees are the silent killers — and equipment leases are their favourite hiding place. Price hardware outright, separately, always.

A note on steps: this is a buying-decision guide, not a repair procedure — the numbered framework above is the actionable part, and there is no settings path to click through.

FAQ

Is Clover or Square cheaper in Canada?
Bought direct, they are close — roughly $1,100 apart in year one on a two-lane setup. Bought through a reseller, Clover can cost dramatically more once leases and hidden fees stack.

Does Clover have a contract in Canada?
Direct from Clover: no long lock-in. Through a bank or reseller: typically 36 months with termination fees of $500–$2,000 documented. The seller matters more than the product.

Why is Clover so expensive through banks?
Resellers set their own rates, lease terms, and contracts on Clover hardware — and bundle long equipment leases with padded processing rates. Always get Clover's direct quote first and line-compare.
