Payment guides · Fee deep-dives

Faster money has a price. Sometimes "slower" wins.

Same-day, next-day, and instant funding each carry their own fees — and a cutoff paradox means the "faster" option can deliver less cash sooner. Here's the priced menu.

Next-day or instant payouts start from a tap — but speed comes with a fee

Standard card funding lands in your account one to two business days after the sale. If you want it faster, processors sell speed as a product: next-day funding, same-day funding, even instant settlement. Each tier has a price, each has a cutoff time, and the interaction between the two produces a paradox most merchants never hear about — the "slower" next-day option can put more of today's revenue in your hands sooner than same-day.

The cutoff paradox: why "slower" can deliver more cash sooner

Here's the paradox. Same-day funding sounds fastest, but its cutoff is brutally early — often mid-morning to midday. Everything you sell after the cutoff rolls into the next cycle. Next-day funding's cutoff runs late evening, around 8pm ET.

For a retailer doing 40% of sales before noon, same-day captures less than half the day's revenue same-day; the rest waits anyway. Next-day with an 8pm cutoff captures ~95% of the day's sales for next-morning deposit. For a restaurant doing 60% of sales after 5pm, same-day funding is nearly useless — the dinner rush misses the cutoff entirely — while next-day delivers almost the whole day, one morning later, usually for a fraction of the price.

The worked comparison: $60,000/month, ~1,500 transactions. Next-day at a flat $5/month: $5. Per-transaction next-day pricing at $0.50: $750/month — absurd for the same speed. Instant at 0.30%: $180/month. Same product family, three prices differing by 150x. The pricing model matters more than the speed tier: always ask whether faster funding is flat-rate or per-transaction before you sign.

The gates: batch deadlines, weekends, eligibility

Faster funding comes with fine print. Typical requirements from published program terms: close your batch by the deadline (one major program requires 6:45pm ET), meet minimums (one program requires $20,000/month volume and 70% card-present swiped transactions), and provide months of processing statements to qualify. New merchants are often excluded outright — you must earn the speed with history.

And business days matter: batches closed Friday evening or before a holiday fund on the next banking day regardless of tier. Same-day funding doesn't move money on Sunday. Plan cash flow around banking days, not marketing labels.

The math: is faster funding worth it for your volume?

  1. Map your sales by hour. If most revenue lands after the same-day cutoff, skip same-day — next-day with a late cutoff delivers more cash sooner for less money.
  2. Prefer flat over per-transaction pricing. A $5/month flat fee beats $0.50/transaction the moment you process more than 10 transactions a month. Per-transaction funding fees are the most expensive way to buy speed.
  3. Check the batch deadline first. A funding tier you can't meet the cutoff for is money for nothing. Confirm the exact cutoff time in your time zone before enrolling.
  4. Reserve instant for emergencies. At ~0.30% per transaction, instant settlement is a tool for the occasional cash crunch — supplier payment due today — not a daily default.
  5. Revisit when volume changes. Funding fees that made sense at $20k/month may not at $100k/month. Re-price speed the same way you re-price markup: annually.

A note on steps: this is a fee explainer with a decision framework, not a repair procedure — the checklist above is the actionable part. Enrolling in a funding tier is a program addendum with your processor, not a settings toggle.

FAQ

Is next-day funding worth $5/month?
Usually yes, if you can meet the batch cutoff — it's the cheapest speed upgrade in processing. The fee to watch is per-transaction funding pricing, which can cost hundreds monthly for the same speed.

Why didn't my Friday sales fund on Saturday?
Funding follows banking days. Friday-evening and weekend batches fund on the next banking day regardless of your funding tier — no program moves money on days the banks are closed.

Can I get same-day funding as a new business?
Usually not — most programs require months of processing history, minimum volume, and a high card-present share. New merchants start on standard funding and qualify later.
